Good morning, this is Superintendent Dave Harmon with a message for the families of bus #3 students only. Bus #3 started out this morning and had some engine troubles so the driver brought the bus back and is headed back out with a spare bus, however this puts the route approximately 12 to 15 minutes behind schedule. Apologies for the inconvenience. Students on bus #3 will not be counted tardy.

January is School Board Recognition Month, and Versailles Exempted Village Schools are celebrating its board members for their dedication and commitment to the district and its students. Today's Board Member Highlight is on Christy Prakel. Christy is our most recent, newly elected Board member - beginning her service in January. Christy resides in Versailles with her husband Mike. She grew up near New Weston on the Stemley family farm and tomato cannery, attending Ansonia Schools, where her father Neil and grandfather Charles served on the school board. Christy graduated from Miami University in 1988. She lived in Indianapolis for 16 years and worked in the publishing industry. Seeking a more peaceful, sensible, and family-centered way of life, the Prakels moved to Versailles, Mike’s hometown, in 2004 with their 5 children: Mary, Margaret, Samuel, Caroline and Lucy. Christy was involved in booster groups and other volunteer efforts at Versailles Schools for 16 years. At St. Denis Catholic Church, Christy and Mike have been active in various ministries. Since 2009, Christy has served as the director of the Darke County Foundation, managing charitable funds for the benefit of Darke County residents.

Reminder that tomorrow, January 15, 2024 - school will not be in session in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King's actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
